I really love the way Grant comes at totally ridiculous subjects so seriously. Still, all that said, it was a hell of a lot of fun to read. But the inclusion of that one scene felt both jarring and condescending. The comfort of maybe the mermaids are acting instinctively rather than deliberately being slowly peeled away was a creepy feeling I was 100% enjoying.

I knew that they were hungry, smart, adaptable, smart, vicious, and smart but there was some plausibility that they were just really tippity-top predators. Grant does a pretty masterful job of showing, not telling, the mermaids' motivations. Even though the scene is pretty short, that is sort of the case here. I also don't like reading from the villain's perspective because it almost always detracts from the suspense.

The scenes weren't totally out of place, given the narration style, but I've never enjoyed reading from the perspective of animals. I loved reading every second of this EXCEPT for the scenes from the mermaids' and dolphins' perspective (okay, I kinda liked reading the dolphins' perspective, dolphins are amazing, but the fact that the dolphins used the names given them by the humans was a bridge too far for me).
